Chinese New Year’s eve, the last night at the end of the year, is also a very special night in the hearts of our Chinese. 五更鐘漏欲相催，四氣推遷往復(fù)回。
帳里殘燈才去焰，爐中香氣盡成灰。
漸看春逼芙蓉枕，頓覺寒銷竹葉杯。
守歲家家應(yīng)未臥，相思那得夢(mèng)魂來。

Five periods at night urge the hourglass sand to flow.
The four kinds of air, like the four seasons, come and go.
The flame just disappeared in the tent lamp of stains;
The incense burner had no aroma but remains.
Spring comes close to the lotus pillow, I behold.
Drinking cups of Bamboo Leaf wine, I feel no cold.
All parents and children for the New Year stay awake.
How can I dream of my dearest to ease my heartbreak?
The Translator’s Remarks
孟浩然（689-740），唐代山水田園詩的杰出代表。
本詩寫于中國(guó)農(nóng)歷新年的前夜。為了慶祝新年，人們通常會(huì)不遠(yuǎn)萬里、全家團(tuán)聚，然而詩人卻在行旅之中，無法與親人團(tuán)聚。詩中先寫光陰易逝，四季輪回；再看自身處境，卻只見殘燈無焰，香盡成灰，心中落寞、悲苦之情油然而生。春寒料峭，詩人起身飲酒驅(qū)寒，不禁想起遠(yuǎn)方的親人正圍坐暢敘，自己希望夢(mèng)中見到親人卻都無能為力。家家都在守歲無眠，又何以夢(mèng)中相會(huì)？
“每逢佳節(jié)倍思親”(王維)，讀到此詩，孤獨(dú)在外的游子難免潸然淚下，而相聚守歲的人們也會(huì)更加珍惜相聚的幸福時(shí)光吧！
Meng Haoran (689-740) is an outstanding representative of landscape poetry in the Tang dynasty.
This poem was written on the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year. To celebrate the New Year, people usually go all the way to be reunited with their family members. However, the poet was on a journey, unable to join them. The poet first wrote about the fleeting time and the change of the four seasons. Then, he looked around and found that his oil lamp was flameless, and the incense had been burnt into ashes. His feeling of loneliness and anguish arose spontaneously. In the chilly spring, the poet rose to drink a few cups of wine to dispel the cold. He could not help thinking of his relatives sitting and chatting together a long distance away. He hoped to meet them in dreams, but he was not able to, because people had a custom of staying awake to welcome the New Year. How could they dream of each other when they were awake?
As Wang Wei said, “people miss their family more in each holiday”. Reading this poem, lonely wanderers will probably shed tears, and those who are reunited in the New Year will cherish the happy time of reunion even more!

王峰，博士后，外國(guó)語言文學(xué)碩導(dǎo)，中國(guó)翻譯協(xié)會(huì)專家會(huì)員，創(chuàng)立“中和三層次詩歌翻譯標(biāo)準(zhǔn)論”?，F(xiàn)主持國(guó)家社科基金中華學(xué)術(shù)外譯項(xiàng)目、國(guó)家社科基金重大轉(zhuǎn)重點(diǎn)項(xiàng)目子課題等。曼徹斯特大學(xué)（2015年）、倫敦大學(xué)學(xué)院（2016年）和肯特州立大學(xué)（2018年）訪問學(xué)者。出版專著《唐詩經(jīng)典英譯研究》（北京：中國(guó)社會(huì)科學(xué)出版社，2015），合著3部，合譯2部，參編教材2部，發(fā)表學(xué)術(shù)論文50多篇。獲省高等學(xué)校人文社科A等級(jí)成果獎(jiǎng)、長(zhǎng)江大學(xué)優(yōu)秀碩士研究生導(dǎo)師獎(jiǎng)等。
WANG Feng (王峰, wangfeng@yangtzeu.edu.cn), the founder of “Harmony-guided Three Level Criteria for Poetry Translation”, is a postdoctoral researcher, a postgraduate advisor in Foreign Languages and Literature, an expert member of Translators Association of China, etc. He is presiding over two national research (sub-)projects on the English translation of classical Chinese poetry and its translation criticism. He has been a Visiting Academic/Scholar at The University of Manchester (2015), University College London (2016), and Kent State University (2018). In addition to over 50 journal articles, he has published A Comprehensive Study on the English Translation of Classical Tang Poetry (Beijing: China Social Sciences Press, 2015), co-authored three books, co-translated two books, and co-edited two textbooks. He has won Grade A Excellent Work Prize in Hubei Provincial Higher Education Humanities and Social Sciences Research, Award for Yangtze University Excellent Postgraduate Advisor, etc.
