Birds are singing on the mountain top.
Is it a cuckoo’s wailing
Or a magpie’s tweeting?
The lingering river runs slow here and swift there.
When is it crying
And when is it laughing?
Grass with flowers and fallen leaves covers the hillside.
Are the leaves protecting the grass with flowers
Or the grass with flowers is protecting the leaves?
Wisps of smoke are swirling in the valley
Which is the smoke of incense and candles
And which is the April mist?
Waves of delicate fragrance flow in the mountain breezes
Which is from the upturned soil
And which is from the freshly cut-off grass?
Small paths intertwined with the graves
Make lots of question marks, big or small,
Marked with deep and shallow steps...
