Chinese Poetry Society’s Poetry Journal English Department Hosts Bilingual Poetry Reading
Chinese Poetry Society’s poetry journal English department held a bilingual poetry reading at the Mead Library in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on November 23, 2019. About 30 people including twelve poets from the Chinese Poetry Society attended the event. Poets drove from as far as two hours away to attend the event. Wisconsin poets who live in nearby cities all gathered together and enjoyed poetry reading in English and Chinese from Poetry Hall’s 4th and 5th issues. Chinese Poetry Society president Yingcai Xu wrote a letter apologizing for being unable to attend the event. He introduced the Chinese Poetry Society and the bilingual journal Poetry Hall. He encouraged attendants to spread out the word about Poetry Hall. The event was successful. It was a wonderful moment and everyone felt the two languages coming together like the confluence of the Chinese Yellow river and American Mississippi river flowing forwards. The Chinese Poetry Society appreciates Lisa Vihos and the Mead library for organizing the event.
About the Wisconsin Poetry Association
English poetry joined Poetry Hall in June. The majority of poets are from Wisconsin. Chinese Poetry Society appreciates the Poetry Hall English department’s Kai Mills, Sylvia Cavanaugh and Lisa Vihos, the managing editor, editor-in-chief and associate editor-in-charge of English poetry, editors Scott Mills, Cheryl Hamamm, Gerry Brauer, Judy Rowe and Jamse Burton for all of their hard work. The Wisconsin Poetry Association has over 70 years of history and has over 450 members. It is one of the strongest poetry associations in the country.

Poetry reading by Sylvia and Lily
Swallowtail Emerges
Sylvia Cavanaugh
Scratches as its crumpled legs
seek purchase
for the upward press
against gauzy filtered light
and that moment of full-on bright
when the butterfly can't turn back
with eyes that cannot blink
away the world
or even its own display
of black etched on gold
what I really want to say
is after stepping into the classroom
I could see between the moments
of the sun
see myself
see the doorway to the hall
vanish
How to Live Like a Water Lily
Annette Langlois Grunseth
Wake up slowly, float in a dreamy world,
silky arms folded over your face until mid-morning,
then open wide, sun-warmed awake.
Breathe from more than one place, soft and supple.
Do not worry about today or tomorrow
or care what others think of you.
Your radiant center is tough, strong,
nourished by water and light.
Wind and wave may engulf you
but you can separate from submersion,
opening your face to the heavens.
Push back beads of wet darkness.
Move freely. Make white water circles until afternoon,
when you fold softly back into yourself,
drowsing in the dimming daylight.
A Tail of the Whale
Tom Singleton
In the watery depths
Below our tiny panga boat
A vast, grey presence moves.
An upwelling of bubbles,
Then suddenly, "Jahi esta!" cries the panga man.
There she blows. "La ballena."
An enormous bulk surges up.
A mountain of mammal dwarfs our boat,
Rising and blowing a few feet away.
A leviathan so colossal,
Yet so gentle, so curious,
Checking out these strange boat beings
In the airy world above hers,
As, astonished, we behold
The watery wonder before us.
Eyes - human and cetacean - meet,
Each trying to comprehend.
Then, she dives, and, as if in salute,
She raises her tail flukes above us.
We touch her tail.
We high-five a whale.
The Fifth of March on Highway 82
Sue Blaustein
Brown oak leaves
arched
like soldiers dying of tetanus
cast clean edged shadows
on the warming ground.
Goats,
muddy llamas,
sheep, blinking
horses
and shaggy, woolly-
mammoth coated ponies
stand
parallel to the road;
or they step slowly
towards the barns
between
the white triangle
hind ends
of geese.

Traced and Erased
Georgia Ressmeyer
In a world of giving
and forgiving sand
where feet, paws,
hooves leave tracks
as hints of passing
through the world —
no creature held to
failures and mistakes,
past efforts speedily
erased as waves deliver
smooth surfaces with
each new breaker —
I can start over,
skirting the lake's
edge like a basted
hem, plodding and
re-plodding my new
life on shifting ground.
Smoke Signal
Sheryl Slocum
All it takes is one cylindrical
chimney of steel
releasing warm air
on a frosty morning
to create a perfect, flumed
column of steam,
a signal for all
to read:
We are here
with our alchemy,
dissolving, transmuting,
sublimating.
Add soot and multiply it
many times over
for an announcement
a biosphere cannot ignore.
Still, the universe, that
great, star-dusty beast,
continues its slow roll:
signals dissipate,
suns cool,
planets congeal,
comets find new fires
to kindle
their glittering tails.
The Weight of Squid on a Full Moon Night
Maryann Hurtt
on Halong Bay
in the South China Sea
I bamboo pole jig
wait for pull and tug
the weight of squid
my pole digs deep
then leaps
a squid now flies
its shiny body lit by the moon
at lunch tomorrow
I will remember an inky eye
how it stabbed my heart
and how we fill our hunger
so dependent
on the weight of squid

A Story of Wanderlust
James Burton
Through life I’ve sang a song of wanderlust
Traveling from Boston to Kathmandu
There is no time for me to gather rust
Through each metropolis, a cuisine’s must
Wafts from taverns, and art in every hue
Through life I’ve sang a song of wanderlust
I’ve dated girls for love and for lust
But all of those relationships fell through
There is no time for me to gather rust
In each new town are new seeds of mistrust
Until I meet old friends or make some new
Through life I’ve sang a song of wanderlust
All of my things are worn and caked in dust
I wash once more; to a new state I flew
There is no time for me to gather rust
Within me I know I could not adjust
To a change of static and just one view
Through life I’ve sang a song of wanderlust
There is no time for me to gather rust
Questions
Marilyn Zelke Windau
if stars are hidden in this cloud of night sky
are there still stars?
if snow is coming in April
is it still winter?
if I can't remember events, locations
are they still events and locations?
is my sibling a forerunner of mindfulness?
if I concentrate on words and meanings
can they be accepted as meanderings and puzzles?
does one life have to be explained?
do lucid moments count in the addition of moments?
does it matter that I didn't take physics in high school?
is blithering an acceptable saga for publication?
The Dark Side
Ed Werstein
That the moon rises and sets
waxes and wanes
and has the face of a man
are moon myths created
by our earth-bound perception.
In reality, it's just a big rock
blasted out to its current position
by some prehistoric cataclysm.
It's just sitting out there
orbiting the Earth
and showing us the same face
orbit after orbit
not even spinning on its axis
as the sun plays shadow tricks with us.
The dark side.
What is she hiding from us?
The back side of the moon.
What is going on over there?
Do you think she is mooning Mars?
Poetry reading by Nathan and Lily
Spring Makes True
Nathan Reid
Spring makes true the wild trails
we dreamt ambling all winter
where the weather smiles so brightly
we must step off the road to meet it
without soaked laces or muddy soles
where gravel is friendly, inspiring folk songs
Spring makes true the unlocked sun
where rainbows escape through prism bars
coating our skin with a simmering sense
we possessed formerly in hibernation
where not the bird, nor the song, nor the nest, nor the tree
but the egg is eyed as most beautiful
Spring makes true forgotten rain
rebirthing our spirits, thawing thoughts
over sunflowers, converting us from
adult to embryo to child to adult again
where warm nights keep windows yawning
as loose cloth giggles on toward summer

Orchid

The orchids fell away
and left two dry sticks.
I kept them by the window

faithless in the ways of death.
But who laughs now?
Only me and the new blossom.

The Invisible Wind
Translated by Yingcai Xu
Spring willows
Sway by streams
In graceful postures
Summer clouds
Roam in the azure sky
In various poses
Autumn leaves
Swirl up from the ground
Looking as if a Chinese fairy lady flicking her long sleeves
Winter snowflakes
Dance in the sky
Looking as if a sea of stars drifting down in a dream
The invisible wind
Becomes visible in helping others
The invisible wind
Turns the four seasons around
And revitalizes all beings
The invisible wind
Is an anonymous hero
And the King behind the scenes

The Umbrella
Translated by Yingcai Xu
You always huddle
In a corner
Waiting
-- Waiting for the weather to change
When rain pelts
When thunder crashes and lightning flashes
And when north wind sweeps
You, showing no fear at all
Spring up
And wide open your arms
Using your body
To shield from the attacks coming from all around
Setting up a safe and peaceful world
For your owner
Your thin body
Shakes in the wind and rain
But despite the thunder and lightning
You have never shaked your will
In protecting your owner
