A certain man hired an Ass for a journey in summertime, and started out with the owner following behind to drive the beast.
夏日的一天，有位旅客雇了一頭驢，要騎著它去游玩。于是，驢的主人在后面趕著驢出發(fā)了。
By and by, in the heat of the day, they stopped to rest, and the traveller wanted to lie down in the Ass’s Shadow;
天氣很熱，赤日炎炎。沒一會，他們就停了下來休息。這位旅客想要躺在驢的影子下休息；
but the owner, who himself wished to be out of the sun, wouldn't let him do that; for he said he had hired the Ass only, and not his Shadow: the other maintained that his bargain secured him complete control of the Ass for the time being.
但是，驢的主人呢，他也想避開太陽，就不愿意讓旅客躺在驢子的影子下，于是，驢子的主人說道：“你只是雇了這頭驢，而不是它的影子。”而旅客卻堅持認為他雇了驢，驢就可以完全由他來擺布。
From words they came to blows; and while they were belabouring each other the Ass took to his heels and was soon out of sight.
就在兩人劍拔弩張，互不相讓的時候，驢子拔腿就跑，眨眼的功夫就不見了蹤影。
