二. 鳥寶寶出世

5月9日這天，我發(fā)現(xiàn)鳥夫妻有些異常。鳥媽總是站在鳥巢外沿上不停地向巢內(nèi)觀看，時而用鳥喙叨叨里面的鳥蛋，沿著鳥巢邊緣轉(zhuǎn)著圈兒地整理，時而低頭啄著自己胸前的羽毛，好像是要將胸前的羽毛扯下來給寶寶當(dāng)被蓋。

鳥夫妻頻繁的交流換崗，很多時候它們都不在巢里。難道是小鳥出殼了？怕打擾它們，我不敢上去看。上次偷拍鳥蛋的照片已經(jīng)把我嚇夠嗆了，但那種既好奇又緊張的心情還是挺刺激的。

晚飯后，我干脆搬把椅子坐在屋內(nèi)，隔著玻璃門窺視鳥巢。有兩次，鳥夫妻頭對頭站在鳥巢的邊沿上，唧唧的不知在說什么。然后，一只就進(jìn)到巢中央半站半坐著，另一只飛走了。我猜想它們也許是商量好，一個去外面找食物，一個在家里守候鳥寶寶。在它們頭對頭的時候，我快速拿起早已準(zhǔn)備好的手機搶拍到了一張它們的合影。由于隔得太遠(yuǎn)，又有玻璃門，照片不太清晰，但卻是這對兒知更鳥夫妻一張難得的伉儷照。

我其實分不清哪個是鳥爸，哪個是鳥媽，它們長得幾乎一樣。但我注意它們換崗時，總有一只飛回來時，先看看巢內(nèi)，仔細(xì)打量后就坐進(jìn)巢中央，而另一只，卻只是站在巢的邊沿上一動不動，像個雕塑，又像一個站崗的士兵守衛(wèi)著家園。

“是不是怕自己的高大身軀壓壞了鳥寶寶？”

所以憑直覺，我認(rèn)為這只就是鳥爸，另一只是鳥媽。那個鳥爸還有個特點，就是有時先回來也不進(jìn)巢，就那么清閑自在地東看看，西瞧瞧。也不等鳥媽回來，沒多大一會兒，一抖落翅膀又飛走了，像個貪玩的男孩。

我還發(fā)現(xiàn)它們的聽力實在是太強了。當(dāng)我又一次看到它們倆頭對頭站在鳥巢的邊沿時，我拿起手機剛要拍照，鳥爸立刻警覺著飛走了，而鳥媽則快速坐進(jìn)巢里。

有個疑問。記得前年（2020年），知更鳥首次在我家葡萄架上做窩。那是在六月份，一個多月之后，也就是在七月中旬最炎熱的那幾天，小鳥才出殼。可今年怎么會三月來筑巢？四月中下旬筑巢竣工，生蛋，5月9日小鳥就出來了？難道知更鳥也有早婚早育？

我又在想，它們?yōu)槭裁茨敲磮?zhí)著地選擇在屋檐下筑巢呢？是不是因為直到5月9日，葡萄藤上也還是空空如也，不像前年六月份，葡萄架上已是密密麻麻的葉子。在葉子中間搭窩，厚厚的葉子可以遮風(fēng)擋雨。想通這一節(jié)，我不由的驚嘆，這知更鳥也太聰明了！知道什么季節(jié)在什么環(huán)境下尋找最佳的安家地點。神奇的大自然??！

我每天進(jìn)進(jìn)出出都非常小心，輕手輕腳地開門、關(guān)門，生怕驚擾了知更鳥一家。它們似乎對我很信任，知道我不會傷害它們，我每次進(jìn)出，鳥媽都若無其事地靜坐在巢中，任憑我和鄰居打招呼，大聲聊天兒。先前我每天彈奏鋼琴練習(xí)歌唱會把門關(guān)上，怕影響鳥媽媽孵蛋。后來感覺它們跟我越來越熟，我就干脆把門打開，隔著玻璃門，我可以近距離觀賞它們，同時也讓這個鳥家庭作為我的聽眾。

“這可是免費的音樂福利呀（這可是免費的音樂會呀），鳥寶寶們將來會不會有異常的歌唱天賦呢？”我得意地想。

2) The Baby Birds Are Born

On May 10’th, I observed that the mother bird was consistently standing on the outer edge of the nest looking down into it. Sometimes she used her beak to pat the eggs inside. She would work on the edges of the nest to arrange it. And she pulled feathers from her chest and used these as a quilt for the baby.

The bird couple frequently relieved one another to act as a guard, and many times neither of them were in the nest. Could it be that the baby birds had hatched?

For fear of disturbing them, I dared not go up to see them. A few days back, I took a photo of the bird eggs. I was worried to be sneaking this picture, but the feeling of curiosity and nervousness was quite exciting.

After dinner, I simply moved a chair and sat in the house, peeping at the bird's nest through the glass door. Twice, the bird couple stood head-to-head on the edge of the bird's nest, chirping to one another. Then, one went into the middle of the nest and sat, while the other flew away. I guessed that they may have negotiated, one must go out to find food, and the other must stay home to watch over the eggs in the nest. When they were facing each other, I quickly picked up the camera and snapped a photo of them together.

I actually could not determine which was the bird father and which was the bird mother, they look almost the same. But I noticed that when they changed the guard, the one robin always flew back, looked inside the nest, made a careful examination, and then sat in the center of the nest. The other robin just stood motionless on the edge of the nest, like a sculpture, or like a soldier standing on sentry, guarding the home.

Intuitively, I thought that this was the father bird and the other is the mother bird. Another characteristic of the father was that sometimes he did not enter the nest when he first returned. He just looked east and west so leisurely. He didn’t always wait for Mother Bird to come back. He would wait a bit, then flutter his wings and fly away, like a playful boy.

I also found that their hearing was extremely sharp. When I saw the two of them standing head to head on the edge of the nest again, I picked up my camera to take a picture, and the father immediately flew away alertly, while the mother quickly sat in the nest.

There is a question. I remember the year before (in 2020), when the robins first made a nest on my grape vines. It was in June, and more than a month later, in the hottest days of mid-July, the birds came out of their shells. But why had they begun to build a nest in March this year? The nesting was completed in the last two weeks of April, the eggs were laid, and the baby birds would emerge from their eggs on May 10. Do robins also have early marriages and early births?

I was thinking again, why did they choose to build their nest under the eaves of the house? Is it because until May 10th, the vines were still empty, unlike in June of the previous year, the grape trellis was already densely packed with leaves by June. If they built their nests in the middle of the leaves, the thick leaves can keep out the wind and rain. Thinking about this, I couldn't help but marvel, these robins are too smart! They know what season and what environment to find the best place to live. Amazing nature!

Every day I go in and out very carefully, opening and closing the door lightly, for fear of disturbing the Robin family. They seem to trust me and know that I won't hurt them, and every time I go in and out, the mother bird sits quietly in the nest, letting me greet my neighbors and chat loudly. Before I played the piano every day to practice singing, I would close the door, for fear of affecting the mother bird hatching her eggs. Later, I felt that they were more and more familiar with me, so I simply opened the door, and through the glass door, I could watch them up close, and also let this bird family be my audience.

"This is a free music concert! Will the baby birds have unusual singing talents in the future?" I thought proudly.
