Ladies and gentlemen:
Tonight, I am greatly honored to be here to attend the 20th Annual Gala & Award Banquet. I must express my sincere thanks to New Jersey Chinese-American Chamber of Commerce, and also, I must extend my deep thanks to my good friend Mr. Sunny Wang, Chairman of Board of Directors of Broad USA Inc., as well as a Director of this Chamber, for his recommending me as a Nominee for winning the “Award of Cultural Ambassador”.
Honestly speaking, I did not expect that I could win such a great award because I am only an amateur writer and my purpose of writing poems and/or essays is just for killing my time since I am a retired man. By saying writing, I wish to tell you that from my retirement date which was Nov. 18, 2011 up to today, Oct. 19, 2023, I have finished writing of eight books, 7 in Chinese and 1 in English. And those books were published respectively in Taiwan and Mainland China. You might be curious and want to know how I could become a writer all of a sudden since I used to be a businessman? My answer to your question is very simple, only two words: GOOD LUCK.
Before my retirement started, I had been working in Beijing, China for 11 years. During that period of time, both my wife and I worked for a well-known American Whole-Sales Company which was located in Atlanta, Georgia. I was this Company’s Chief-Representative of their Beijing Office while my wife was this Beijing Office’s Business General Manager. After I got retired and came back to USA, I was at a loss. I really felt confused and upset because I had got used to working, working and working. Without working, I did not know what to do. Sometimes I even felt as if I were totally given up by the world.
Just at that moment, a gentleman named Zhicheng Hu came. Mr. Hu was my neighbor, as well as an Editor-in-Chief of a famous Taiwanese Publishing House. He managed his Taiwan Office’s business from his home in the USA. It was Mr. Hu who suggested me to write books. Encouraged by him, I tried first of all to write something about me myself. As a result, a maiden work of mine --- My Autobiography was finished. In Nov. of 2011, the book was published in Taiwan, and it was a success. It can be said with certainty that without Mr. Hu’s help, I could never ever write or publish any books. Mr. Hu is my “Bo Le” (a wise man who always gives a good judge of talent). From the bottom of my heart, I thank Mr. Hu indeed. And from then on, I have been keeping on writing poems and essays endlessly. From this, you can see that it was my good luck that Mr. Hu appeared timely.
OK, I must end up my speech now. Please allow me to say again that thank you all very much. And it is my sincere wish that this Commerce Chamber will achieve an even greater success every year in many years ahead.

***以上英語發(fā)言稿是我根據(jù)2023年10月19日在新澤西舉行中美商會20周年慶典宴會，《文化大使》的頒獎大會現(xiàn)場作英語即興感言的回憶而寫成的。下面我把英文譯成中文。
女士們，先生們：
今天晚上，我非常榮幸地能在此參加20年年慶大典及頒獎盛宴。本人要對新澤西中美商會表示衷心的感謝。與此同時，我還要對我的好友、美國遠大公司董事長王曙光先生（同時也是新澤西中美商會的董事）表示深深的謝意，因為是王先生把我作為競爭《文化大使》獎的提名人推薦給商會的。
說句老實話，我沒有預料到我會有獲得此獎的殊榮，因為我本來就是個業(yè)余作家，我舞文弄墨的目的就是以一個退休者的身份打發(fā)每日的時光。講到舞文弄墨，我想告訴諸君的是：從我2011年11月18日退休之日起到今天2023年10月19日，我一共完成了八部書，七部中文書，一部英文書。這八部書分別在臺灣和中國大陸出版。諸君可能有點好奇了，想知道我是怎么從退休前的商人轉 身為作家的？回答您的問題，我的答案很簡單，就兩個字：好運。
在我退休之前，我在中國北京工作了11年。在那個11年的時間里，妻和我都為一家位于美國喬治亞州亞特蘭大市的頗有名氣的公司效力，這家專營倉庫批發(fā)的公司在北京設立了辦事處，我是這家公司在北京辦事處的首席代表，而我妻則是辦事處業(yè)務總經理。
等我退休時結束了北京的工作回到美國后，我非常不適應退休后的生活。因為我退休前一直玩兒命地工作，退休后突然無事可干讓我感到失落和迷茫，有時候我感到我仿佛被這個世界所拋棄了。就在那個時刻，一位名叫胡志成的先生向我走了過來。胡先生是我當時在美國的鄰居，同時也是一家臺灣著名出版社的社長兼總編。胡先生在美國遙控著他臺灣的出版社生意。是胡先生建議我寫書的。在他的鼓勵下，我試著寫書，先從寫我自己開始。于是，我自傳體的處女作《歲月如重》誕生，此書于2012年11月在臺灣出版、發(fā)行，應該說是一次成功?？梢钥隙ǖ卣f：如果沒有胡先生，就不可能有我的任何書的寫成和出版，所以說胡先生是我的伯樂。從我的內心深處，我是非常感謝他的。自從頭一本書出版后，我就欲罷不能了，一直在不停地寫作詩文。從這一點您可以看出：我的好運就在于胡先生在關鍵時刻的出現(xiàn)。
好了，我應該結束我的發(fā)言了。請允許我再一次地說一聲：謝謝！我衷心地祝愿新澤西中美商會在以后很長的歲月里年年取得更大的成就！
