?Reliving the Flames of War?
By Ji Junqun (Brazil)
—Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the War of Resistance by Brazilian Chinese
Today, rosy clouds steep palm leaves,
Samba drumbeats crack through firecrackers.
Brazil’s yellow jerseys blaze like wartime beacons,
Wilting Mount Fuji’s eight-petaled ice crown of deceit.
A golden-hooked medal gleams toward the East.
At this hour,
I fold reeds into dragon boats on a whim—
They defy trade winds, crossing a century—
At that familiar roaring strait,
Towlines carve eighty trenches with desperate courage;
A lone sail presses upstream to claim the dawn.
Mother loosens tattered clasps,
Her bosom baring scars to heavens—
Her left breast soothes lotuses blooming over Nanjing’s fields,
Her right lifts star clusters above Xiling Gorge.
When Mount Emei curled like a swaddled babe beneath gunfire,
Who bent to gather splintered oars,
Mending the shattered moon with Yangtze boatmen’s chants?
Spring thunder tempers at Gezhou Dam now;
Iron anchors sprout red coral,
Shell casings melt, forging new bridge piles.
Now, crimson carps leap city walls with sunrise in their jaws,
Clouds boil crimson—
A million egrets scatter bell-peals
Deep into the Pacific...
Afterglow, as if spilling from wave crests,
Floods every wound plowed by samurai swords.
When the colossus shatters the fog,
The Yangtze sets eighty monuments ablaze—
Reflecting sails of homecoming clouds.
