Four Odes to Autumn Fields
By Huanongnong (Shangguan)

I. Plentiful Crops in Fields
Ears of rice hang low o'er a thousand ridges,
Stalks of millet stand tall like ten thousand poles.
Wind stirs waves of gold that surge and roll,
Dew wets grains, each round as a pearl.
Sweat nurtures new ears, heavy and full,
Sickle's song mingles with autumn's joy.
Granaries fill, bringing farmers delight,
Elders' faces beam with smiles so bright.
II. Abundant Fruits in Orchards
Red persimmons dangle from branch tips,
Yellow pears weigh down tree waists.
Grapes hang in clusters, like strings of pearls,
Pomegranates split, revealing seeds in swirls.
Fragrance lingers around the courtyard,
Sweetness melts and drifts by the lips.
Baskets of bamboo brim with picked fruits,
Homeward steps go, carefree and mute.
III. Fresh Vegetables in Sheds
Green cabbages spread, painting the ground green,
Red amaranths line beds, glowing red.
Cowpeas hang like thin, drooping silk threads,
Eggplants shine, soft as purple velvet spread.
Dew wets onion leaves, making them green and fresh,
Frost soaks mustard hearts, enhancing their taste.
Pluck fresh ones to cook, savoring rural fun,
After the meal, the pleasant mood still lingers on.
IV. Rich Scenery in Suburbs
Distant peaks are veiled in thin mist,
Flat wilderness connects to the endless sky.
Wild geese cry, their calls piercing the fog,
Insects chirp, their voices through mist slog.
Maple leaves burn bright, like torches ablaze,
Reed catkins dance, like cotton in a haze.
Leisurely chanting in autumn's scenery,
My heart rests, as free as white clouds flying.
