2025 Public Diplomacy Person of the Year Awards Ceremony Held in Beijing, Uniting Global Friends to Build Bridges of Civilizational Exchange
(Public Diplomacy Network News) December 13, 2025 – The highly anticipated "2025 Public Diplomacy Person of the Year Awards Ceremony" was grandly held in Beijing today. Organized by the Public Diplomacy Network and co-hosted by the International Exchange Working Committee of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade in Services, the event brought together diplomatic envoys, experts from Chinese and foreign think tanks, cultural figures, and representatives from all walks of life. They gathered to honor 16 awardees from five continents, recognizing their outstanding contributions to promoting cross-border and cross-cultural exchanges and cooperation.
This year's selection centered on the theme "Civilizational Coexistence, Shared Destiny," closely aligning with the global significance of the Global Development Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative. After multiple rounds of rigorous evaluation, the selection committee identified 16 outstanding individuals from diverse fields, including educational exchange, cultural communication, economic and trade cooperation, and new media. Among them were long-serving scholars who have fostered cultural understanding for decades, young pioneers using new media to connect hearts and minds, industry leaders driving practical cooperation along the Belt and Road, and artists who bridge emotional divides through their work. Their diverse efforts exemplify the core principle that "public diplomacy is the bridge for people-to-people connectivity."
The ceremony featured distinguished moments as envoys from various countries presented certificates of honor. Kamau, a Kenyan agricultural expert, was recognized for his over ten years of dedication to agricultural cooperation between China and Africa. By introducing Chinese hybrid rice technology to several East African nations, he has helped local farmers increase their incomes, embodying the spirit of South-South cooperation through tangible action. Aki Hondō, a renowned Japanese photographer, has captured the transformation of China's urban and rural landscapes through her lens. Her exhibitions touring Japan have allowed more Japanese people to experience a true and multi-dimensional China. She stated, "Cultural exchange doesn't require grand narratives; a single photograph or conversation can bring hearts closer." Lucas, a Brazilian youth blogger, has amassed over 10 million followers by sharing insights on Sino-Brazilian cultural differences in fluent Chinese, emerging as a representative of cross-cultural communication among the younger generation.
The person in charge of the organizing committee emphasized that at a critical juncture of global changes and the Asian Century, public diplomacy, as a vital force in shaping national images and promoting people-to-people bonds, has become increasingly valuable. Social think tanks and non-governmental actors, with their flexibility and innovation, have become important participants in public diplomacy. The practices of this year's awardees fully demonstrate that civilizations thrive through exchange and mutual learning. Only through sincere dialogue to eliminate estrangement and practical cooperation to build consensus can we collectively address global challenges.
Since its inception, the Public Diplomacy Person of the Year selection has grown into a key brand event for non-governmental exchanges between China and the world, honoring nearly 100 practitioners from across the globe. Looking ahead, the initiative will continue to build diverse platforms for communication, encouraging more people from China and abroad to become envoys of civilizational mutual learning and infusing sustained non-governmental energy into the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
