She Walked Toward Spring
by Bei Mei Shi Ge
She once took time
grain by grain
and planted it in the garden—
bending down, watering, waiting,
believing every offering
would one day bloom.
The morning soil
knew her hands.
Roses, hydrangeas,
those unassuming flowers
remembered her—
a gaze both gentle and steadfast.
She once pointed at a map,
walking Europe’s streets in her mind:
rivers, churches,
dusks wrapped in unfamiliar tongues.
Some roads
her body never reached,
yet longing itself
had already carried her far.
And at the other end of the map,
she always saved a place
for one road—
back to China,
back to familiar streets,
before the old house’s door,
where waiting for her
was a call spoken for half a lifetime:
“Mom.”
She wished to sit beside her mother again,
listening as old stories slowly repeat,
steam from the food
rising together with the hometown accent.
That is the one place in the world
needing no translation,
and the earliest spring
in her heart.
For you,
the husband who walked a lifetime beside her:
the years you carried together
do not suddenly lose their weight.
Her kindness,
when you were most weary,
stood beside you—
now, in another form,
it continues to watch over you.
For you both,
her two daughters:
she taught you
how to meet the world with gentleness,
and also how, when needed,
to step forward, to shoulder, to protect.
When you live this way,
she is there—
within the outline of your backs.
She did not leave in haste,
only took one step ahead
to see those landscapes
you have not yet reached.
The garden will bloom year after year,
and your road is still long.
When you miss her,
look at the flowers,
look toward the distance.
She is already there,
in spring and in light,
walking ahead for you.
