A Fairy Tale on the Grassland
By Yi Hua
A story of a wolf and a woman
is brewing into a tender fairy tale.
The woman, her heart drowned in worldly tears,
the wolf, guarding the wooden hut alone,
still waits for her return, treading through the cold wind.
The grassland’s cruelty and bloodshed
are finally softened by tears,
blooming into Gesang flowers across the plain.
Beneath the prayer flags, I gaze at the grassland, lost in thought.
If there were only sheep, butterflies, and blossoms,
the wind would sheathe its whip of frost.
When life breaks free from the chains of water and food,
even an ant can tread on clouds and turn into rosy haze.
An eagle hovers in the sky.
The wild grass, burned by wildfire,
sprouts new shoots again in spring.
On the grassland, the wolf must chase the sheep,
the sheep must graze the grass—
yet every blade of grass
is a living thing, nourished by heaven and earth.
