A red flame, sprouting forth from the misty rain of Jinling (Nanjing), blooms brilliantly in the dawn of the capital (Beijing). With her pen as a torch, her literary criticism as a sharp blade, and her poetry as a boat, she has carved a resplendent name—Chai Yonghong—into the literary landscape of the New Era.
This is no ordinary name, but a resounding footnote in the history of contemporary Chinese literature; this is no ordinary figure, but a brilliant symbol of the times for Jinbang Toutiao; this is no ordinary title, but the responsibility and glory of a specially?appointed critic for the Shanxi Branch of the Shaoling Poetry Society. We take mountains and rivers as paper, years as ink, unfurling this magnificent poetic scroll—and the first to leap forth is this red flame that traverses time and space, illuminating the literary world; it is this literary pioneer who stands firm with poetry in her heart, criticism in her bones, and integrity in her actions.
I. Misty Rain of Jinling, the First Bud of Poetry
Chai Yonghong’s poetic soul was born amid the misty rain of Jinling. This ancient city, steeped in the literary heritage of six dynasties, bears the rippling oar?songs of the Qinhuai River that have stirred poetic rhythms for millennia, and the crevices of the Ming Dynasty city walls hold the unyielding spirit of literati. A native of Nanjing, she grew up nurtured by such cultural soil, imbued with the poetic charm of “A land of beauties south of the Yangtze, an imperial capital of Jinling”, the melancholy of “The singing girls know not the sorrow of national ruin; still they sing The Backyard Flowers across the river”, and the vicissitudes of “The swallows that once nested in the halls of Wang and Xie now fly into ordinary homes”.
Hong Xin, Bing Lizhi (Ice Lychee), and Yizhi Honglian (A Single Red Lotus)—three pen names, three mirrors reflecting her poetic heart.
